The MIST DIFFUSER BLACK No0.5 has a rather subtle diffusing effect, making the filter perfect in settings with strong backlighting. The No1 has a comparatively stronger light diffusing effect, making the filter great in low light scenes.
IN VIDEO & CINEMA

The cinematic effect is not only great in photography, but also excels in videos and movies. It pushes a little bit back that recent trend of "over sharpness" and gives a vintage look that is reliably repeatable across various cameras and lenses.

The HOYA MIST DIFFUSER BLACK is available in No0.5 and No1. Compared to other soft filters, the MIST DIFFUSER BLACK No1 does not whiten the image, and compared to the No0.5, has a greater light diffusing effect in strong backlighting or night scenes. The No0.5 creates a more subtle effect, making the filter perfect even with strong backlighting or in situations with strong light sources close to the camera.

In nightlife street photography, both No0.5 and No1 can be used. If there are light sources close to the camera, the diffusing effect of No1 may turn out too strong, so the No0.5 is in such a situation more suitable.

In nightscape photography with light sources far away, the effect of No0.5 might be a little bit too subtle. The No1 will achieve a clearer effect in such a situation.

In settings with backlighting, the choice of the filter depends on the strength of light. With strong backlighting, the No0.5 tends to be the preferred filter. With a weak backlight, the No1 is recommended to make the effect more visible.

In low light situations, like a tree in the shadow in the example above, the No1 is recommended to achieve an effect that will stand out more clearly. For photographers who prefer a subtle effect, the No0.5 will be a better fit.

MIST DIFFUSER BLACK No0.5 and No1 are recommended for different scenes. No0.5 is suitable for night scenes and backlit scenes when the sun starts to set, while No1 is more suitable for forward lit or low light situations.
The effect seen in the viewfinder and the result of shooting (depending on print, monitor size, etc.) may differ.
The soft effect is stronger when the focal length of the lens is on the telephoto side and weaker at the wide-angle side.
The final result will also change depending on the exposure compensation, so it is recommended to use exposure compensation if necessary.
The effect may vary depending on the type of light source and other shooting conditions like for example shutter speed.
